Tomber Amoureux de Lang
June 2013 - June 2015 / Paris, France
The First Systematic Language
Exchange Group in France
SUMMARY I established Association Tomber Amoureux de Lang to offer low-cost opportunities to learn particularly French and Korean languages. While most other language schools adhere to conventional teaching methods, my association has taken an unorthodox approach and encouraged students to exchange thier cultures beyond the languages via interactive communication, under the slogan "to teach is to learn twice".
OUTCOME The association has grown rapidly and is currently France's largest French-Korean community.
Short Documentary
Our association has been introduced on various media such as National Geographic Korea and was made into a short documentary by a French cinematic school 3iS. We obtained positive interest from media as one of the most active intercultural communities in France.

Strong Student Engagement
I believe that genuine student engagement occurs only when memebers of the community feel fully involved in creating new cultures together. Our monthly picnics, for instance, usually had more than 40 members enrolled. And all the regular members felt strong ownership and emotional attachement to our association.

Our Own Study Materials: "Learning by Teaching"
Even under the hectic schedule running the association and studying at school at the same time, making new study materials tailor-made for our language exchange system was the core job I had to do every week. With my own study materials, students were able to exchange thier languages continuously without lacking topics. And I also aimed for students to learn frequently used components of the languages so as to put them in to practice right away.

Paper Advertisement
Flyers sound old-fashioned but still play an important role to market your service in the early stage. Distuributing pamphlets in some strategic spots helped enormously us grow rapidly and increase the number of members. When I first started, I made those flyers on my own and distributed them but it was definitely worth it considering the outcome.
Unforgettable Memory
The rolling paper on the left was a precise gift from our members of the association when I finally left France in June 2015. For two years, I learned not only how to learn a community but also genuine friendship across borders and social responsibility of local community while managing my first own association.
Online Marketing Tools
My intention was to creat a Facebook group that is completly open to any members so that anyone can ask/answer questions regarding languages and even organise a day trip together.

I made our official website in the hopes of broadening our services into other language exchanges such as French-Japanese or French-Chinese. Yet, this website has not been complet due to my move to London.

Meetup
Meetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. It has been our largest window to inform to French people about our association.
